This is the concept for an all-new Renault Twingo EV – a retro-style electrified return for the popular city car. It’ll sit beneath the upcoming 5 EV in terms of size, performance and price with the latter being emphasised heavily by the brand.
It was unveiled at Renault Group’s Ampere Capital Markets Day by CEO Luca De Meo who stated that this is just a concept for now but “we will develop it now in the record time of two years, from concept to start the production, matching the speed of the Chinese OEMs”. This means we could see a production version by the end of 2025 – the early months of 2026 seem more likely, however.
The French manufacturer has set some optimistic targets for the tiny electric city car. It’ll apparently achieve 6.2 miles per kWh and have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than the average ICE car with a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions over the course of its life cycle.
It’ll be built in Europe by Renault’s EV sub-division, Ampere, using sustainable materials and that, combined with the small scale of the Twingo EV, is how Renault have been able to promise such affordability. De Meo reckons we can expect a list price of under €20,000 which works out at roughly £17,500 based on current exchange rates. To add a bit of perspective to that price, you should be able to pick one up for around £90 per month. Cheap.
Whilst you don’t get a lot of car for that money, you do get “a fit-for-purpose urban vehicle, state-of-the-art EV without compromise”. A lot of focus has been put on developing new software for the Twingo EV with the brand suggesting it will be like “a smartphone on wheels”. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates and an AI assistant named ‘Reno’ are among the technological advances made by the manufacturer.
With the price of EVs being one of the main reasons people give for not making the switch from internal combustion, this should go a long way towards changing that narrative. Those prices are slowly but surely coming down now the technology is becoming more efficient and affordable.
