Volkswagen have announced that they will be unveiling a turbocharged Up at the Geneva motor show which takes place at the beginning of March.
The new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine churns out 89bhp and 118lb ft of torque over 1500rpm. That’s a considerable improvement on the two naturally aspirated engines which produce 59bhp and 74bhp respectively. The turbocharged Up will reach 114mph and will get to 62mph in 10 seconds, figures which match those of the Mk1 Golf GTI. The defining difference between the two is the economy – The Up will do 64.2mpg combined.
There are 13 body colours to choose from on the upgraded Up. The seven new colours are Teal Blue, Coral Red, Costa Azul, Honey Yellow, Edelweiss, Blueberry and Savanna Gold. There are also three roof colours. Other cosmetic changes include new front and rear bumpers, tweaked headlights and tail-lights, coloured alloy wheels and a visable exhaust.
Inside the car, smartphone connectivity is improved by a downloadable app that links the GPS system to the multimedia system which is now displayed on either a 3.1in monochrome or a 5in colour screen. There’s extra switchgear on the steering wheel, too, and climate control is available for the first time on the Up.
There is going to be an Up Beats special edition as well, which features a 300W Beats stereo and seven speakers. These include tweeters in the A-pillars, woofers in the doors and a sub in the spare wheel well. The Beats edition will come with racing stripes, colour-coded seatbelts and 15in alloys as standard.
As of yet, there has been no word on how much the turbocharged Up will cost but we suspect Volkswagen will reveal this when the car debuts at the Geneva motor show. It is expected to go on sale toward the end of summer.
