The Tokyo Motor Show starts this week and, for the first time, the world will see what we believe to be the new Mazda RX-9!
Mazda have really kept their cards close to their chest with this concept. All we have to go on so far is the teaser image they released earlier this month, seen above, and a small amount of detail regarding the nature of the car.
As you can see from the image, this new Mazda takes on a similar shape to sports cars such as the Jaguar F-Type and the Mercedes AMG GT with its two-door rearward-cab, the long bonnet and the sloping roof line. Mazda claim that they “strove to condense the company’s sports car history to as great a degree as possible”.
When asked about the significance of the concept, Mazda’s response was “look to the Cosmo Sport”. Also known as the 110S, the 1967 Cosmo Sport was the world’s first mass-produced rotary coupé. It has since been confirmed that the Mazda RX-9 is also powered by a rotary engine and will be accompanied by the Cosmo Sport at the show.
The last Mazda to run on a rotary engine was the RX-8 four-door coupé, which was removed from production in 2012. Whether or not this concept is a direct replacement for the much-loved RX-8, it is more than likely to become the Japanese firm’s new ‘halo’ car, and the Mazda RX-9 title would be very well received by fans.
More details and images will be available after the Tokyo Motor Show – We’re just as excited as you are!
