Chevy and Honda Unveil their Speedway Aero Kits

May 4, 2015 By Ben Williams Leave a Comment

2015 Verizon IndyCar Series will feature new Chevy-developed aero package for high-speed oval competition.

Chevy’s new speedway kit.  One of the obvious changes from the other aero kit is the much smaller rear spoiler.

As part of the IndyCar’s new rule change, Chevy and Honda have both created new aero kits for IndyCar vehicles that use their engines.  IndyCar’s variety of racing venues means that the automakers needed to make two different aero kits: one for street/road courses that we have been seeing the last few weeks, and one for high speed/speedway courses that have not been used yet.  Since the beginning of May starts the count down to the famous Indianapolis 500, Chevy and Honda have both pulled the cover off of their speedway aero kits.

Honda’s new speedway kit. Like Chevy’s, Honda’s speedway kit the much smaller rear spoiler compared to their other aero kit.

Developed using the same methods as their other IndyCar kits, Honda and Chevy have designed their aero kits to achieve the maximum amount of possible performance on the Indy Oval.  This includes several different trail versions, a multitude wind tunnels tests, a bunch of CAD drawings, and a lot of virtual and real world track testing.  There are not many differences between these new kits and their street circuit counter-parts.  The only difference is that these speedway kits will reduce as much aerodynamic drag so that these cars will be able to achieve high speeds.  According to Chevy, their cars will reach speeds of over 230 mph on the Indy Oval.

As we are still a few weeks out from the Indy 500, we will have to wait to see exactly how well these kits will do.  Based on the already exciting IndyCar series has been, especially with Chevy currently upsetting series favorite Honda, the Indy 500 is looking like it will be an exciting race.
