Thomasz Kasperczyk is a pretty lucky guy. Firstly, his day job is competing in the FIA European Rally Championship in the new Under 28 class. Which isn’t a bad way to live. The Polish driver currently races for the Tiger Energy Drink Rally Team in a Ford Fiesta R5.
And secondly, he managed an amazing escape after a crash at the Rally Islas Canarias. Whether it was driver error or a mechanical problem, the Fiesta ran wide on a mountain stage. And with a serious drop off the side of a cliff, amazing the metal crash barrier kept the car on the side of the road. Both Kasperczyk and his co-driver D Syty were able to get straight out of the car unhurt.
Obviously the car will need some repairs. And some new racing overalls will be needed. But it’s an impressive example of how crash barriers can work to absorb impacts and keep vehicles where they are meant to be.
I can only hope that in the moments before Kasperczyk and Syty escaped the stricken Fiesta, one of them looked at the other and said “Hang on lads, I’ve got an idea” before whistling the theme of the Italian Job. If not, there’s definitely an opportunity missed.
In all seriousness, we’re just glad that everyone was OK.
