This extremely rare 1956 Ferrari 290 MM, which is one of only four ever to be made, is going up for auction in New York this December. The auctioneers, RM Sotheby’s, believe it’ll sell for upwards of $28 million!
“Why spend £18 million on a car?”, you ask. Well, this particular 290 MM was raced by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio – arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time.
This car was built specifically for 5-time F1 Champion, Fangio, and he used it to race in the famous Mille Miglia 1000-mile race, in which he finished fourth. It was raced in Europe by Phil Hill and it was the winning car at the 1957 Buenos Aires 1000km race. It also appeared at the Nurburgring and the Rouen GP.
The car was raced until 1964, when it made its way into a private collection in America. After 34 years of being owned by collector, Pierre Bardinon, it was passed on to its current owner.
The 290 MM is Ferrari Classiche certified and still contains its original gearbox, body, and 3.5 litre V12 engine.
The Ferrari 290 MM really is a classic car, with a vast amount of history – well worth the estimated £18 million price tag!
