Before the Golf GTI Clubsport has even been released, Volkswagen have announced that they have produced a more hardcore and track-focussed version – the Clubsport S.
This is the ‘standard’ Golf GTI Clubsport – The model the Clubsport S is based on.
It’s due to be unveiled at next week’s Wörthersee meet, an annual event in Austria which celebrates fast VW culture. The new Clubsport S is not only more powerful than the ‘standard’ Clubsport, but also the Golf R.
The only confirmed mechanical detail so far is that the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine will produce a massive 306bhp! That’s 10bhp more than the Golf R, which sends it’s power to all four wheels – The Clubsport S is FWD. That’s a lot of power for just the two front wheels to handle so it’ll be interesting to see how it corners. Judging by the cornering ability of the current Clubsport, however, it should cope pretty well.
The only other confirmed detail is that it has a racing profile ‘set up for the Nurburgring’. Presumably, VW’s goal is to get the Golf GTI Clubsport S round the ‘Ring faster than it’s rivals, the Civic Type R, the Megane 275 Trophy R and the Leon Sub8, hence making it the fastest FWD car in production.
The 2016 Wörthersee event welcomes Volkswagens – and other VW Group products – and their owners from all over Europe, and begins on May 4th.
