As we reported a few months ago, Chevy held a huge event over the past weekend to celebrate the newest model of one of the automaker’s most legendary creations. The new Camaro will continue of legacy of its previous generations of being a powerful muscle car while being a modern, lightweight sports car. According to Chevy, the new generation Camaro only uses two parts from the previous generation: the Chevy emblem on the rear of the vehicle and the SS badge.

The new generation Camaro is leaner, stiffer platform than the previous models. The new Camaro has dropped over 200 pounds and has slightly shrunk in just about every direction. The new exterior styling for this new generation has been scrutinized by Chevy to reduce aerodynamic lift to achieve both good handling and efficiency. The often criticized being archaic, the new Camaro will include of lightweight materials including new aluminum front suspension links. In fact, over 70 percent of the new architectural components are unique to the new Camaro. The new Camaro SS will be getting the Corvette style Magnetic Ride Control and Drive Mode Selector that had been limited to the previous ZL1. All of the Camaro models will also offer big Brembo brakes, and Goodyear tires.

Since we are talking about a muscle car, we need to mention the power plants. The new Camaro will have six all-new powertrain combinations to choose from. The engines available for the Camaro will include a 275 hp 2.0L Turbo, an all-new 335 hp 3.6L V6, and, of course, the 455 hp LT1 6.2L V8. All three engines can come with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The three engines offer a range of efficiency and power.

With the new performance options, the Camaro has also received several interior upgrades. The new driver focused interior will include several infotainment screens, redesigned center counsel, and a LED ambient lighting system that offers 24 different colors. The interior will also feature higher quality materials than the previously laughable plastics that are typical of previous Chevy models. While Chevy has not stated exactly what these new materials will be, we believe it is safe to assume that the Camaro interior will be very similar to the Corvette’s.
The new Camaro looks like it is not only aiming to go against its ever present Mustang rival, but also Chevy’s European rivals. Since this is Chevy, the Camaro will be sold in a couple of different trim options, including LT, RS, and the SS. Chevy has not announced an official date when the new Camaro will go on sale but they have said that the LT and SS models will be on sale later this year. Hopefully we should expect to see a Z/28 model in the near future.
