The Mercedes AMG GT R has become the fastest rear-wheel drive sports car ever to lap the Nurburging having set a time of 7:10.9.
To add a bit of context, the previous record was set by the Dodge Viper ACR with a time of 7:12.13. Before that, it was the Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package’s 7:14.64. Even more impressive is that it beats the regular AMG GT S by over 24 seconds. The current range-topper set a time of 7:35.
The difference is thanks to a big boost in power for the AMG GT R, up to 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque, altered gear ratios and an aero kit that produces up to 155kg of downforce. All of that on top of the rear-wheel steering system adopted by the Merc makes for a very fast car.
Though not an ‘official’ AMG lap time, it is an extremely impressive one. The £143,275 Mercedes AMG GT R goes on sale in 2017. You can read more about it here.
