This beautiful 1987 BMW M3 E30 could be yours by the end of this weekend. It’s going under the hammer as part of Silverstone Auctions’ online sale this Saturday (May 23rd).
This iconic BMW M3 needs no introduction to anyone who would describe themselves as a car fanatic. Its history is remarkable with countless wins in touring car races, rallies, hill climbs and all sorts of other events.
There are, however, a couple of things that separate this stunning example from your ‘standard’ E30 – most notably, the fact that it is currently owned by Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay.
Secondly, though it started life as a standard road-going M3, it has recently been fitted with a ‘Competition Pack’ by Classic Heroes. Importantly, this adaptation hasn’t impeded on its “turn-key usability”. When Jay Kay commissioned the build, he emphasised that he wanted it to be quick and safe on track but to remain comfortable and usable on the road.
Having said that, the list of upgrades is fairly substantial. The engine is a 2.5-litre competition unit with a modified cylinder head and camshafts amongst other changes. Paired with a carbon airbox and programmable ECU, it now puts out 260bhp.
The suspension setup has undergone some serious work, too. Modifications include sports suspension, competition top mounts, negative camber and poly-bushed suspension joints.
Stopping power comes from AP competition brakes, front and rear. It’s been fitted with a competition-ratio steering rack and cornering is aided further by 17-inch BBS split rims and Toyo Proxes R888 R tyres. He wasn’t joking when he said he wanted it to be quick on a track, was he?
Cosmetic changes include carbon mirrors, a carbon Evo Sport rear spoiler and Evo 2 front splitter. It’s also presented in an excellent works livery that can be removed if required.
Inside, you’ll find a roll cage, Recaro racing seats with Schroth 6-point harnesses, a Momo removable steering wheel and a fire extinguisher to complete the touring car makeover.
Unsurprisingly, this car will not come cheap. In fact, with an estimated value of £48,000-£56,000, it’s not far off the cost of a brand new M3 despite being over 30 years old.
Don’t be put off by that, though, as it’s certainly a worthwhile investment. The BMW M3 E30 is already an icon and, with proper care and attention, it’s value will only increase with time. I’d certainly want it in my garage if I had the money!
