Koenigsegg has continued their production of their psychotic “megacars” that have been known to turn the motor industry on its ear. With several production striking looking models that produce over 1,000 hp, Koenigsegg could very well possibly take Lamborghini’s “exciting production model” crown.

The Koengisegg Regera has a body made of pre-impregnated carbon fiber and kevlar. Just like former Koengisegg models, the roof can be removed and stored under the front hood.
Following the impressive One:1, Koenigsegg’s newest “megacar”, called the Regera, made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. Using the Swedish word meaning “to reign,” the Regera is going into a direction that Koenigsegg have never gone before: a hybrid. Just like Ferrari’s La Ferrari, McLaren’s P1, Porsche’s 918, and now Honda’s NSX, Koenigsegg has combined the power of electric motors and the tradition engines. There is only one problem with that, Christian Koenigsegg is not a fan of hybrids. However, according to Koenigsegg, the Regera is not a hybrid because it is uncompromised unlike typical hybrids.
The Regera is also more luxury focused than previous Koenigsegg models. To achieve this, Koenigsegg created adaptive engine mount designed to be soft enough to keep the vibrations and sounds from the massivly powerful engine at bay, allowing the Regera to be driven in almost complete silence. The luxury continues into the interior with features including added insulation, eight-way electrically adjustable memory foam seats, A Koenigsegg 9” infotainment system, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, front, inner and rear camera system with recording capability, Apple CarPlay, and an supreme sound system.
Despite calling it a luxury car, the Regera will be Koenigsegg’s most powerful model ever. The twin-turboed, aluminum 5.0 L V8 will produce 1,100 hp and 944 ft-lbs of torque. Combined this with the Regera’s three electric motors, the total output of the Regera goes up to 1,500 hp and 1,475 ft-lbs of torque. The initial specs say the the Regera will cover 0-60 in around 2.8 seconds, and the 0-250 mph acceleration in less than 20 seconds! Those other supercar hybrids are not looking quite as impressive now are they?
The formidable list of Regera’s features goes on from there. According to Koenigsegg, the Regera is the first full robotized car in the world. The hood, doors, and what I guess you can call a rear hatch all feature automatic closers that can be controlled from a remote or smartphone. On top of this, the Regera features active and adaptive front and rear wings, chassis control and lifting system that adjust to driving conditions.

This is a schematic of the KDD System in the Regera. You can see that two of the electric motors are placed behind the engine at each of the drive wheels and the low final drive ratio that makes the Regera’s insane one-speed acceleration possible.
What is really interesting about the Regera is the new Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) Transmission. The KDD electric system replaces the traditional transmission completely, allowing for the reduction of drivetrain loss and adding benefit for the all-electric (EV) mode. In town and cities where speeds are typically under 30 mph, the Regera will be in full EV mode. When speeds over 30 are achieved, the power of the engine will be added gentlly using torque vectoring. Koenigsegg says that the entire KDD system and the 620 V battery pack weighs less than the same engine with a traditional transmission would. Keeping the luxury theme, the KDD is also capable of creating an incredibly smooth ride. Even Koenigsegg refers to this new system a being “bi-polar.”
The new Koenigsegg Regera is definitely, on paper, the best hybrid supercar on the market right now. Of course, we are talking about Koenigsegg meaning that their will on be 80 Regera’s made and you can expect a high price tag. It is going to be very entertaining if there is ever a shootout with all five of the hybrid supercars. Hopeful this happens in the near future.
