At the end of every calendar year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) releases a list of the UK’s most popular new cars and these are the results for 2019.
For the third year in a row, it’s the Ford Fiesta at the top of the podium with Volkswagen Golf in second place. Other regulars appearing in the top 10 again include the Nissan Qashqai and the Vauxhall Corsa.
Let’s take a look at the full list:
1 – Ford Fiesta – 77,833 registrations

Despite a drop of nearly 20,000 registrations from last year’s 95,892, the Fiesta tops the list yet again and by a considerable amount, too.
2 – Volkswagen Golf – 58,994 registrations

The Golf has managed to close the gap on the Fiesta this year despite coming to the end of it’s cycle. A new model coming out this year could bring it even closer to the Fiesta in next year’s list.
3 – Ford Focus – 56,619 registrations

The Ford Focus comes in third place and isn’t far behind the Golf. The Focus did spend most of the year in second but a late surge in sales for the Golf saw it just miss out. A good year for Ford, nonetheless, with two of their cars in the top three.
4 – Vauxhall Corsa – 54,239 registrations

With 54,239 new registrations in 2019, the Corsa has dropped out of third place in this year’s list. Like the Golf, though, a new model coming out could see it climb again in 2020.
5 – Mercedes A-Class – 53,724 registrations

Fifth place gives the Mercedes A-Class premium hatchback bragging rights over the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, neither of which appear in the list.
6 – Nissan Qashqai – 52,532 registrations

Yet again, the Nissan Qashqai is the UK’s favourite SUV with over 10,000 more registrations than it’s closest rival, the Ford Kuga.
7 – Ford Kuga – 41,671 registrations

Whilst it hasn’t quite done enough to completely close the gap on the Qashqai, it is certainly getting there and Ford can’t be too disappointed. After all, it’s their third entry in the top 10.
8 – MINI – 41,188 registrations

Despite selling 7,000 more units than last year, the MINI drops down a place to 8th in this year’s list.
9 – Volkswagen Polo – 37,453 registrations

Another appearance in the top 10 despite a pretty poor year compared to 2019 when it came 6th with 45,149 registrations.
10 – Kia Sportage – 34,502 registrations

For the second year in a row, the Kia Sportage concludes the top 10 with 34,502 registrations showing that the Korean manufacturer is no longer such an outside choice.
So there you have it – the UK’s best selling cars in 2019. Any surprises? Let us know in the comments section below or via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
