Nissan reveals ‘Smart’ rearview mirror
A good idea from Nissan, which combines a traditional rearview mirror with a rear-facing video camera display, which means you can remove obstructions and annoying passengers in the rear seats from your view. Great if you have tall or annoying passengers in the back, or you’ve crammed in so much luggage and other junk that you can’t see a thing. Just try and ignore the horrific music in this demo video:
It’s not the first time a rearview camera has been used, but integrating it into a normal rearview mirror makes it a more natural fit for most drivers. The 1.3 megapixel camera feeds to an LCD monitor with the video augmented to look like the same reflection you are accustomed to, and will also compensate for sun and headlight glare. It should go on the market in Japan in 2015.
