New Edge ST unveiled by Ford
Ford have confirmed that they’ve unleashed their Performance division on an SUV for the first time and this is the result… The 2019 Edge ST. The announcement comes before its debut at the Detroit Motor Show.
In its standard form, the Edge isn’t a particularly exciting car. It’s big, it’s heavy and it’s far from fast. Now, though, the team behind cars such as the Focus RS and the GT have worked their magic and the outcome is somewhat surprising.
They’ve taken the most powerful model and upgraded its 2.7-litre twin-turbocharged V6 to 335bhp and 380lb ft of torque. Pair that up with a “quick-shifting” eight-speed automatic gearbox, four-wheel-drive and Sport Mode, you’ll get sharper throttle responses, more exhaust noise and, ultimately, a much faster car.
The Edge ST also benefits from a tweaked chassis, upgraded brakes and Ford Performance suspension. Differences in terms of the car’s appearance include a wider grille, lower side skirts, dual exhausts and sporty 21-inch alloys. Though the changes aren’t massive, it really does look a lot nicer. There aren’t really any more toys in the Edge ST than there are in tne standard model – it’s already pretty well packed with extras.
As it stands, we don’t know exactly when in 2019 it will be available or how much it will cost to buy one. What we do know, however, is that we won’t be seeing it on sale in the UK which is a bit of a shame if you ask me. Obviously SUVs aren’t as popular here as they are across the pond but they’re certainly on the rise and I definitely think a big, sporty Ford would sell.
I’m sure we’ll be given the all important details when it is properly unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show. For now, though, you can watch the video below for a quick glimpse of the Edge ST in action with Ben Collins behind the wheel.
What do you think then? Would the Edge ST do well in the UK or is Ford’s decision to keep it in the US the right one? Let us know in the comments section below or via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
