Mercedes updates E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet
The Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet have received their mid-life updates just a few months after the saloon and estate were facelifted.
Much like the 2020 BMW 5 Series, the styling changes are far from extreme – there was no need for them to be. Standard models such as the pictured Cabriolet receive new LED headlights and taillights, a slightly flatter headlight design and Mercedes’ ‘A-shape’ grille.
It also benefits from four new paint colours and updated wheel designs. The tweaks are similar for the top-spec AMG E53, but that also gets Merc’s universal AMG grille as well as quad-exit exhausts and a rear diffuser.
Amongst the interior changes is Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment system. You’ll notice the two 10.25-inch screens situated side-by-side in the dashboard – they’re standard. If you really wanted to, though, they can be upgraded to 12.3-inch units.
There’s new safety tech, too, which has carried over from its four-door counterpart. The E-Class’ new adaptive cruise control system makes adjustments to speed based on any online reports of upcoming traffic. There are also sensors in the steering wheel so the car can detect whether or not you’re paying attention and make adjustments accordingly. All very smart.
Whilst the E-Class’ saloon and estate variants benefitted from new PHEV options, the Coupe and Cabriolet do not. There are two diesel options – one puts out 191bhp, the other 335bhp. Entry level petrol options put out 194bhp while the E450 4MATIC has a 268bhp output.
Then there’s the E53 which is powered by a bi-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six putting out 429bhp and 384lb ft of torque. 0-62mph takes 4.4 seconds in the Coupe and 4.6 seconds in the heavier Cabriolet. Both will reach 155mph.
It’s the AMG E53 that you want and I only say that because, unfortunately, there will be no V8-powered AMG E63. Whilst it will be an option for the saloon and estate, it has not carried over to the Coupe of Cabriolet.
Full specs and prices have yet to be released but the updated Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet go on sale in June. Perfect timing for some roof-down driving in the sun.
