2020 Ford GT comes with more power and less paint

This is the 2020 Ford GT. It’s the model’s first update since the reveal of the second generation GT in 2015 and it brings more power, suspension tweaks and updated cooling amongst other changes. Yet again, it looks incredible.

It uses the same 3.5-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 as before, but has been improved using lessons learned from the MKII GT race car. Revised ECU calibration, uprated ignition coils and gallery-cooled pistons give the GT an extra 13bhp (now 660bhp) and the torque spread is improved despite the output figure staying at 550lb ft.

New buttress ducts have been designed to increase air flow by up to 50% and larger intercoolers have been fitted to keep the charge air temperature under control. These upgrades ensure the increase in power can be maintained in all conditions.

Suspension damping has been fine-tuned to improve stability in ‘Track’ mode and the previously optional titanium Akrapovic exhaust system now comes as standard. This reduces weight and increases noise. For the first time, carbon fibre wheels are an option for the standard GT.

New for 2020 is the GT Liquid Carbon edition. This swaps actual paint for an exposed carbon fibre finish which looks very smart. It also comes with carbon fibre wheels fitted as standard. Other optional features the Liquid Carbon edition makes available include titanium lugnuts, six-point harness anchors and various interior and exterior trim options.

Normal colour choices are still available, of course, and the Heritage Edition, which celebrates the original Le Mans winning GT40s, has seen some minor tweaks, too. Following customer feedback, the Gulf Racing livery has been updated so that the blue and orange paint is separated by black pinstripes. The carbon fibre number that features on the livery has been switched from ‘9’ to ‘6’ – a homage to back-to-back winning GT40 chassis no. 1075.

Ford says production will continue until 2022 but there are no obvious plans to make the updated model available in the UK.

Do you like the changes made to the 2020 Ford GT? As good as the carbon finish looks, I’d think I’d much rather have that Gulf Racing livery on my driveway. Let us know what you think in the comments section below or via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
