1964 Jaguar 3.8 E-Type Barn Find Up for Auction

Fancy a cheap winter project? This rare right-hand drive 1964 Jaguar 3.8 E-Type barn find is up for auction in October. OK, so the estimate of £35-40,000 sale price and the cost of restoration won’t exactly be cheap, but we can still dream.

Just 1,798 of the right-hand drive Coupes were made, and this one has had just two owners before being stored for years. The late owner apparently bought it for his wife in 1970. With the last MOT dated 1973/1974 at 50,000 miles it went into storage not long afterwards. The current mileage of 52,738 backs up the fact it’s been stored for around 40 years, and hasn’t even been started in the last 15.

Registration PRF 935B was originally sold by Byatts of Fenton, who were the Jaguar distributor for Stoke on Trent. It was then kept by three private owners, all located in Staffordshire, which was designated in the 1960s by the RF of the number plate.

Despite the years in storage, or perhaps because of them, the interior looks relatively good compared to the outside. The iconic steering wheel stands out from the grey interior, which will set off the red paintwork nicely when they’re restored to the original brilliance.

Even after four decades in storage, somehow the 1964 Jaguar 3.8 E-Type barn find still looks ready for action. Possibly because the wheel and gear lever have retained some shine under all the dust. And while the outside has a fair amount of patina for a £40,000 investment, you do get a spare wheel rim for your cash.

If you have the money, then you’re probably working out the restoration cost. And if you’re like us, you’re probably wondering why you never seem to stumble across all of these amazing classics tucked away in barns across the country…

If you have the money, then the 1964 Jaguar 3.8 E-Type barn find will be sold by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford on October 12th, 2016.

Also at Auction: 1959 Jaguar XK150 SE 3.4 Litre Drophead Coupe

If you want a classic without the restoration work, then H&H will also be auctioning this 1959 Jaguar XK150 SE 3.4 Litre Drophead Coupe.

It’s estimated to sell for £135-165,000, and has covered under 200 miles since being restored by XK Engineering.

It’s the last of the XK line and has the SE four-speed manual and overdrive gearbox. The model was introduced in 1957 with independent torsion-bar front suspension, a live leaf-sprung rear axle and rack-and-pinion steering echoing the XK140 predecessor. But the new XK150 has more subtle curves, a padded leather dash, and more importantly Dunlop disc brakes.

The Drophead Coupe with occasional rear seats and a soft-lined hood also benefits from the Special Equipment package. This added a B-type cylinder head on the 3442cc straight-six engine, overdrive, twin exhausts, wire wheels, and a claimed 210hp to produce a 0-60mph of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 124mph.

Including both the 3.4 and 3.8 litre versions, just 663 right-hand drive Jaguar XK 150 Drophead Coupes are thought to have been produced.

So if you’re interested in collecting classic Jaguars, and happen to have a huge pile of cash sitting around, it’s probably worth a trip to Duxford on October 12th. Meanwhile we’re off to go and see if any farmers will let us have a look in their barns….
