The 2016 Yamaha YXZ1000R SxS Launched
The 2016 Yamaha YXZ1000R is what the firm calls a Side-by-Side vehicle (SxS) for sports recreation. We just think it looks like a whole heap of off-road fun.
It’s powered by a compact 3-cylinder 998cc DOHC engine. Triple fuel injectors feature 41mm bodies, the 4-valve cylinder head runs with a 11.3:1 compression ratio, and there’s a single-axis balancer to reduce vibration. As it’s generally going to be used somewhere dirty and hot there’s a high capacity aluminium radiator with integrated fan, plus a high capacity air intake.
The YXZ1000R also has a new 5-speed sequential shift transmission, three-into-one centre-mounted high volume exhaust and a dial to choose 2WD, 4WD and 4WD full Diff-Lock modes.
The lightweight high-tensile steel chassis has a removable 3-piece composite underbody protection system to compliment the tubular structure up top. And there are Fox 2.5″ Podium RC2 shocks with huge piggyback reservoirs – all fully adjustable for preload, rebound, and compression damping at high and low speed. The double A-arm front suspension has 406mm of travel, compared to the extra-long A-arms at the rear for 432mm suspension stroke.

You may need the speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering and 245mm brake discs with 2-piston calipers. The Yamaha YXZ1000R also features exclusive Maxxis 27-inch Bighorn 2.0 radial tyres, and has a cargo bed with a load carrying capacity of 136kg.
Other features include a standard handbrake, a glove box and central tray in the cockpit for storage and LED lights for the front and rear. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Yamaha, the YXZ1000R is available in a special Yellow/Black design with the iconic ‘speedblocks’ made famous on their racing motorcycles. The special edition also gets cast aluminium bead-lock wheels for even more extreme terrain, and will be available in December 2015, with the standard Racing Blue version out in February 2016.
