Anyone who follows the World Rally Championship will know that Volkswagen have already won the first three races this season with their Polo R WRC. Has that stopped them from preparing to continue their domination in 2017? Of course not.
This is a concept design for next year’s car. Volkswagen say the new car will be bigger, lighter and faster than the car that has already won in Monte Carlo, Sweden and Mexico so far this season. Apparently, it will be 50mm wider with larger front and rear wings to match – It’ll still be 25kg lighter, though.
It’ll be more powerful, too. A lot more powerful. The current Polo R WRC produces 314bhp but that is expected to rise to a seriously impressive 375bhp for next year.
Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito says that changes in the regulations will allow them to make significant improvements next year.
“They will be considerably more dynamic, whilst at the same time being safer. As usual, we are working painstakingly on the development of the next generation of the Polo R WRC”, Capito explained whilst discussing the new cars.
The ultimate aim for VW is to “allow the 2017 Polo R WRC to be as successful as its two predecessors.” Said predecessors helped Sebastien Ogier to titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. It’s also looking likely to happen again this year so the new car has a lot to live up to.
We can’t wait to see the result!
