Yesterday we showed you the brand new Mercedes E63 AMG Estate which is very appealing but also extremely expensive. Now Skoda have given us a cheaper alternative – the new Octavia vRS 245.
The name relates to the 242bhp (245ps) that its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces. That’s 15bhp up on its predecessor, the Octavia vRS 230, which makes it the most powerful Octavia ever.
Compared to the 604bhp E63 AMG we brought you yesterday, that’s nothing but it’s still more than enough to have a lot of fun. It’ll do 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds in estate form and 6.6 seconds as a hatch. Both are limited to 155mph. Gearbox options are a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG.
Only available in front-wheel-drive, the vRS sits 14mm lower has a 38mm rear-track. An electronically-controlled VAQ limited-slip differential and a ‘Sport’ mode built into the ESC come as standard. Skoda’s Dynamic Chassis Control is optional.
In appearance, the estate is the same as the hatchback with those new headlights which were introduced when it was facelifted last month. The Octavia vRS 245 also gets new interior technology, an active safety kit and Alcantara sports seats and steering wheel.
No prices have been announced as of yet but given that the 230 was surprisingly affordable, one would assume that the 245 will be, too. You’ll be able to see it in the flesh at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
It does look very, very nice, doesn’t it? Just think, though – you could have a 300bhp all-wheel-drive Golf R Estate for probably not all that much more.
