Say hello to the car that has the potential to knock the Audi RS6 off of it’s perch. This is the new Mercedes E63 AMG Estate.
First of all, what’s not to like about fast estates? They’re spacious, practical, they look good and they’re pretty much just as fast as saloons these days.
The same can be said for this one. It looks incredible and with the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 as the saloon, it’s just a tiny bit slower but you get that big 1,820-litre boot out of the standard E-Class Estate.
The ‘regular’ E63 AMG Estate gets 563bhp and 553lb ft of torque and the S gets 604bhp and 626lb ft. That’s more power than the RS6 and it’ll get you 0-62mph times of 3.6 seconds and 3.5 seconds respectively (compared to 3.5 and 3.4 for the saloon). The top speed is limited to 155mph for both but that can be nudged up to 180mph if you specify the AMG Driver’s Package.
That power is put down through all four wheels via the Merc’s 9-speed automatic gearbox. In the S, though, you get a ‘drift mode’ which effectively decouples the front axle from the rear and makes the E63 AMG Estate a mad rear-wheel drive death trap. That’s something the RS6 cannot do. Opting for the S also gets you dynamic engine mounts and bigger brakes, though both can be fitted with ceramics.
Mercedes say the iconic AMG V8 exhaust noise has been fine-tuned for the estate which hopefully means it’s going to be louder. Obviously, it’ll be a fair bit heavier than the saloon but I’m not sure you’d notice the difference too much when you put your foot down.
The E63 AMG Estate will be on show at the Geneva Motor Show next month before it goes on sale in April.
