Just a couple of weeks after the unveiling of the standard car, M-Sport have shared the first images of their new Ford Fiesta WRC.
Given how quickly this has been released, it’s clear that M-Sport have had access to the new Fiesta for some time now and it looks as though they have made full use of the new WRC regulations. It’s a little bit on the mental side.
You’ll struggle to miss the ridiculous body kit the Fiesta WRC has been fitted with. The splitters and dive planes combined with the enormous rear spoiler and diffuser leave the car looking utterly bonkers. Safety has been improved thanks to a 50% increase in ‘energy absorbing foam’ and a steel roll cage.
The suspension will be extremely versatile. It’ll need to be adjustable to cope with the extreme landscapes the World Rally Championship will be throwing at it.
In terms of power, the Fiesta WRC uses a 1.6-litre Ecoboost petrol turbo to create an astonishing 380bhp. The hydraulic six-speed sequential gearbox helps to deliver that power to all four wheels and M-Sport have said “the sound has to be heard to be believed”. That roughly translates to “it’s really bloody loud”.
Sebastian Ogier – the current and four-time WRC champion – has been testing the car since being left without a seat after Volkswagen pulled out of the championship.
“We start the 2017 season with one goal in mind”, says M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson. “Returning to the top step of the podium”. With Ogier behind the wheel, you’d expect them to be spending a lot of time up there.
