Less than a month after McLaren unveiled their new 570S at the New York Auto Show, McLaren has already announced the next model in their new Sports Series. McLaren made this reveal earlier today at this week’s Shanghai Motor Show. Called the 540C, this is the fourth model that the British Automaker has unveiled this year.
The new 540C is very much the typical McLaren vehicle; sharing all of the racing DNA as all of the other McLaren models as well as sharing basically everything with the other Sports Series model, the 570S. Following McLaren’s nomenclature, the 540C’s 3.8L twin-turbo V8 will produce around 540hp. The 540C’s light-weight, aerodynamic body is made from aluminum, and features a unique carbon fiber chassis that is similar to the one on the 570S. The 540C also has the typical mid-engine rear-wheel drive design that you would expect from a McLaren. All these performance numbers mean that the 540C does a 0-60 time of about 3.5 seconds and a top speed of about 199 mph.
Like the 570S, the 540C is much more focused on day-to-day driving than the more track focused McLaren vehicles. The new model will feature the newly-developed suspension system that they introduced with the 570S. However, according to McLaren, the 540C has received further damping tuning over the 570S to make it more comfortable from everyday driving. The similarities between the Sport Series models continue to interior, with the 540C having similar leather “sport seats”, and the same full infotainment system that includes a digital instrument cluster, a large stereo system, and touch screens that have been integrated with media and climate controls.
While the 540C Coupe is basically like every other McLaren model, this does not mean that it is not noteworthy. Since the new model is currently one of the less powerful vehicles in the McLaren line-up, the 540C is currently the least expensive McLaren model with a price tag of just £126,000 ($187,885). The 540C will be available globally in early 2016, but McLaren is currently taking pre-orders. Looking at that price and the horsepower of the 540C, McLaren might have problems selling the vehicle in the American market. Most of the modern Muscle Cars currently on sale, like the Charger Hellcat, make more power than the 540C and cost half the price. The Corvette and Viper, as well, have better performance number while costing about $80,000 less than this new model. We will have to wait to see how the 540C and 570S will compare to the current sports car market.
