In many people’s eyes, the BMW M4 is the new M3. The M3 isn’t quite what it used to be, the M4 is brilliant. Now, though, footage of the 2016 BMW M4 GTS has been released and it is a special, special car.
Like the M3 GTS, which came out in 2010, the M4 GTS has been stripped back to two seats and BMW are only making 700 – a mere 30 of which will be sold in the UK. The price? £121,770! Now, that does sound like a lot of money – it is a lot of money – but I think you’ll understand when you know a bit more about it…
You’re wondering how fast it is, aren’t you? Well, the short answer is that the BMW M4 GTS is the fastest production car they’ve ever made. The engine is very similar to that found in the standard M4 – a 3 litre twin-turbo straight-six. The GTS, however, is fitted with a new water injection system which increases the power from 425bhp to a staggering 493bhp! The torque is also improved drastically, up from 406lb ft to 442lb ft. It sounds awesome!
With all of this extra power and the help of it’s paddleshift gearbox (there is no manual alternative), the BMW M4 GTS will get from 0-62mph in a whopping 3.8 seconds, which matches the 503bhp Mercedes AMG GTS. The top speed is limited to 190mph. This speed gets the M4 GTS round the Nürburgring in an impressive 7min 28sec – 30 seconds faster than the standard M4.
When adding this much speed and power to a car, handling can become a huge issue… Not for BMW, though. As you’ll see in the video at the bottom of this story, the BMW M4 GTS handles superbly.
The car uses a three-way M Coilover suspension and independently adjustable low and high-speed compression damping. The anti-roll bars have been upgraded and the M4 GTS-specific Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres massively increase the car’s grip. All electronic assistance systems have been improved to cope with the added performance and carbon-ceramic brakes are standard.
How have BMW reduced the weight of the M4 GTS? Carbon fibre everywhere! Bucket seats, centre console, splitter, diffuser, roof – all carbon fibre! It now weighs in at just over 1500kg.
Moving away from the performance, the BMW M4 GTS looks sensational. The three colour options are Sapphire Black Metallic, Alpine White and Frozen Dark Grey Metallic (as seen in the pictures). All of which come with the secondary colour, Acid Orange, which is everywhere from the stitching to the alloys.
The new body-kit, with the three-position spoiler, the two-position splitter and the carbon fibre diffuser, looks amazing. The 18-inch front and 20-inch rear alloys are also very easy on the eye. Really, I don’t need to tell you how good it looks – you can see it for yourself.
The BMW M4 GTS will be making its début at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, and goes into production in March 2016. BMW hope the launch date will be around June 2016. Remember, it can be yours for £121,770 and only 30 will be sold in the UK!
Now, just to make you want this beast of a car even more, have a video of the M4 GTS getting sideways round the Anglesey Circuit. Turn up the volume and enjoy!
